We here at Maverick PR have worked with all kinds of developers and publishers, from some of the largest global video game companies like Vivendi, Square Enix and Ubisoft, right on down to smaller, independent developers like the amazing folks at Kiz Studios and Dark Vale Games.  It is exactly this variety and the breadth of experience that comes with working on both blockbusters and unknown IP, that makes us who we are.  And we love it.

In an interview last year, we very publicly stated that we were looking to do more work and create more partnerships with independent developers, to try and elevate the groundbreaking work and innovative designs that sometimes got lost in the shuffle of AAA blockbuster releases and multi-million dollar PR budgets.  We think that some of the most exciting, engaging and creative titles of the coming generation — as well as some of the most explosive growth in our industry– will explode from the independent development over the next five-to-ten years.

We’re excited to be on the forefront of this trend, and we are genuinely excited to announce that we are continuing to expand our work with independent developers by partnering with Bloober Team and their awesome upcoming PS4 launch title, Basement Crawl.  Basement Crawl is a very creepy, very interesting game that combines elements of Bomberman and Spy vs Spy and drops it right into the PS4 download ecosystem with macabre art and settings and multiplayer action.

When gamers get their new consoles, they will quickly realize that Basement Crawl is a unique experience to PS4 and is the first must-have download for the new system.

We’ll be telling you a lot more about this game in the coming weeks, so stay tuned and keep an eye out!

We’re really excited to be helping Dark Vale Games and all of their partners release FORGE today.  FORGE is an awesome new indie PC game that evolves PC multiplayer with amazingly fun, fast and strategic skill-based PvP.  Check out more at

FORGE has followed a long road to get where it is today — and where is it?  On Steam (, Amazon, and Gamersgate for $19.99 (each purchase awards a second copy of the game FREE to give to friends!).  The game went through a “Kick-Finish” campaign on Kickstarter, launched an Alpha, and then was chosen by fans on Steam to be in the Greenlight program… all the while ,more than 20,000 players were transfixed in the beta program, constantly refining and bug squashing as release date neared.

Enhanced Kickstarter Campaign Creates No-Risk Trial; Offers 40% Discount on Final Release Pricing

FORGE Alpha Play Is Live NOW

CARSLBAD, CA (AUG. 27, 2012) — Dark Vale Games, an independent video game developer based in Southern California, is upping the ante in support of its Kickstarter campaign for FORGE, offering backers of the game the opportunity to “try-before-they-buy” with instant access to the Alpha demo of the game, which is available now for download and play. FORGE is a multiplayer-only PC game due to release in 2012 that bridges the gap between the skill-based action of shooters and the strategic player-vs-player competition of massively multiplayer online games.

“We’ve always said that we want to run our business a little differently, to do what is right for those people playing our games,” said Tim Alvis, COO/CTO of Dark Vale Games. “We’re doing just that – we’re giving PC gamers the opportunity to try FORGE’s unique multiplayer by pledging money on Kickstarter but never having to pay a dime if they’re not satisfied. As an added incentive, those who pre-purchase FORGE via Kickstarter now will receive a significant discount compared to the retail price.”

Face-Punchingly Good.”  Shouldn’t that be an official ’nuff said??  How about: “I can’t pledge on Kickstarter fast enough”  Still not enough?: “…I’m a believer.”   The media LOVE FORGE.

We’ve been crowing about Dark Vale Games’ awesome new indie game FORGE for some time now, telling people that its mix of FPS speed and MMO abilities was creating something totally new and very fun.  But screenshots and teaser trailers can only go so far.

Pre-order FORGE now for a special early-adopter price: $15 via the official Kickstarter Page.

That’s why we hit the road with Tim Alvis, COO/CTO of Dark Vale Games, to visit some of the top gaming sites in the world and offer up some hands-on time.

The Pyromancer lights up the beautiful "Forest Ambush" map

If we ever needed to validate our opinions about this game, we sure got it on this trip.  The media loved the vision and the execution of FORGE and especially loved thumping the PR rep in a the quick head-to-head matches we played on the gorgeous Unreal Engine 3-powered maps.

We’ll leave it up to the outlets to tell you what they thought via the articles below.  You can also nab a peek at the game in-action in the narrated walkthroughs embedded below (note: the maps are designed for 8v8 – 24v24, not 1v1, so they are demonstration only).

IGN – “Rocket-jumping wizards? I can’t pledge on Kickstarter fast enough…What’s admirable here is that Forge isn’t expecting to own a massive audience out of the gate – it’s trying to earn a community with good ol’ fashioned great game design.”

MMORPG – “Face-Punchingly Good PVP… I can tell you that while Forge may be difficult to describe to the uninitiated, its gameplay will be instantly comfortable to aficionados of the MMO and FPS/TPS genres.”

GAMESRADAR – “FORGE looks like it’ll be a great romp for gamers looking to test their skills without investing hours into acquiring gear before they can compete.”

GR recorded a GREAT walkthrough session.  Check it out!

GAMESPOT:  Take a look at GameSpot’s quick gameplay sesssion!

MASSIVELY -“…there’s a lot to love about Forge, and I think that anyone who gives the game a fighting chance will find something about it to keep him around… I think Forge definitely deserves our attention.”

GAMESBEAT:  “Dark Vale Games is like the Gordon Ramsay of independent video game developers. The studio took two industry staples — massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) and first-person shooters (FPS) — trimmed the fat, added its own special spices, and simmered everything under medium heat until the recipe was fit for public consumption.

GAMEZONE: “If you’re the kind of gamer that is always going, ‘man, they should have done this…’ well  here’s your chance to put your money where your mouth is.”

DIGITAL NOOB – “This week I was able to check out FORGE firsthand, and it is definitely one of the top games I’m anticipating the release of. It takes the best things of MMOs (the PvP), Shooters (in your face action) and MOBAs (the even playing field) and mashes them together in a great way….I admit that I was skeptical at first, but after meeting with the guys and spending some time testing out the game, I’m a believer.”

Indie Dev Unveils FORGE Gameplay; Offers Fans a Chance to Pre-Order and Earn Other Benefits From Kickstarter Pledge

We’ve been telling you about FORGE just a little bit for a smidge over a month now.  It’s an exciting concept — a game that combines MavPR’s love for fast-paced, twitchy skill-focused shooter multiplayer with our other love… strategically tearing each other to shred in MMO PvP.

We’re extremely lucky to be able to work with Dark Vale Games on this project, and now we’re finally able to show off how the game looks and plays (an Alpha state, of course).

Today, Dark Vale Games released their first gameplay trailer (above), a four-minute showcase of the Assassin and Pathfinder classes going head-to-head in a frantic deathmatch.  This game is going to be hella fun — the difference between you living and dying at my hands will be pure skill… not your gear that you spent 20 hours grinding for while I took my kid to karate.  You n00b.

Maverick PR Clients CLEAN UP At E3 2012; We Take a Moment To Bathe In Their Glory

A writer from a video game web site emailed me last week after we announced the new game FORGE from indie developer Dark Vale Games and he said (paraphrasing) “Wow… you guys really know how to pick the best clients … they’re all doing such interesting things.” I couldn’t agree more. Some of that is dumb luck, of course, but a lot of it is by choice.

We’re not a big agency and we don’t handle HALO or CALL OF DUTY.  Sure part of us would like to swim around in that obscene amount of gamer cash, but we started Maverick with the intent of choosing who we work with and the way we work.  We honestly feel that our client partners are some of the most innovative, creative and downright interesting people and products in the industry.  And it seems that everyone who went to E3 2012 agrees with us. Our clients ARE the best!
